A TRULY GLOBAL BIOTECH FRONTRUNNER

BioFashionTech  is a biotech startup that brings a close-loop solution into the textile industry and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable, resource-efficient bioeconomy through the development of cross-supply chain circular solutions.

BFT innovation is a game changer in creating a circular industry with biotechnology and increases BFT company’s competitive advantage.

The situation

In Europe, every inhabitant uses 26 kg of textile material every year and disposes of 11 Kg of it, with a total production of textile waste estimated at around 5 Mt/y. In Italy, in 2019, traced textile waste amounted to 157.7 Kt, of which 60% consisted of synthetic fibers whose production and disposal generate significant carbon dioxide emissions. Only 15% of textile is recycled while the rest  is incinerated or ends up in landfills where it takes 200-plus years to degrade. As it decomposes, it leaches toxic chemicals and dyes into the groundwater and our soil. It is also responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions each year. The production of textiles is expected to rise by 63% by 2030.

Currently, mechanical and chemical fiber – to – fiber recycling are the two primary methods for recycling textiles. These technologies can handle only medium-high, mono-type fibres while we can work with low quality mixed fibers types. Problems arise when trying to work with multi-material textiles and different colours. Furthermore, these are potentially unecological processes or very difficult to manage.

Legislation

The Industrial Strategy, the European Green Deal, and the Circular Economy Action Plan all named textiles as a key industry in which the EU can help lead the way for a carbon-neutral, circular economy. Upcoming EU legislation for sustainable and circular textiles will see member states required to ensure that collection, reuse and recycling systems are in place for the separate collection of discarded textiles by 2025.

Our Mission

Our mission is to unlock the intrinsic value of textile waste in order to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable, resource-efficient economy through the development of cross-supply chain circular solutions. Up-cycling waste into alternative raw materials gives it a new function and keeps it out of landfills. Furthermore, the value of discarded textiles represents a massive commercial opportunity that will close the loop in fashion production. We envision a future in which cutting-edge technologies use fibers as building blocks to create sustainable new raw materials, rather than relying on precious natural resources. Working with stakeholders across supply chains who share our vision to reinvent how we use and consume products; rethinking how we design, manufacture, and sell products

Our Vision

We are a clean technology-based, purpose-driven company that specializes in waste-to-value. We envision a global textile industry that benefits people and the environment by improving climate, soil health, water quality, and biodiversity. Our goal is to improve people’s lives and to create a new cross-chain recycling economy model. We accomplish this by utilizing all of the scientific and innovative power at our disposal to create value from waste and to tackle some of the world’s most difficult challenges. We are so committed to making the world a better place that our company strategy is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals  7, 11, 12, 13 and 17.
